Our full review
TL;DR: An affordable big-screen tablet that is great for streaming, reading and casual games, as long as you can live with lockscreen ads and an app store that is not Google Play.
Why it is on our radar
The Fire HD 10 is showing up in this week's deal listings, and with the holidays approaching, a tablet for movie nights, travel and keeping the family entertained is an easy gift pick. It is built for relaxing more than for heavy work, and that focus is where it does best.
What you get
The centerpiece is a 10.1 inch Full HD display (1920 x 1200), which suits streaming shows, reading comics and browsing the web. An octa-core processor and either 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM (this listing is the 4 GB, 32 GB version) handle everyday apps, and Amazon says performance is about 25 percent faster than the previous generation.
Other practical touches include a microSD slot for up to 1 TB of extra storage, dual speakers, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, 5 MP front and rear cameras, and up to 13 hours of rated battery life. It supports a compatible stylus for note taking (sold separately), and Amazon Kids offers parental controls if the tablet will be shared with children. Alexa is built in for hands-free questions and smart home control.
The catch
This configuration shows ads on the lockscreen, which some people find annoying. The bigger limitation is software: Fire tablets do not support Google Play, so you rely on Amazon's own app store, and some apps you use on other tablets may not be available.
There are smaller compromises too. Wi-Fi 6 is not supported, charging is over USB-C 2.0, the included adapter is a modest 9W, and only about 24 GB of the 32 GB of storage is available to you at first. At roughly 15 ounces, it is also on the heavy side for one-handed reading. Amazon also promotes a newer Alexa Tablet 11 with Google Play on this product page, so compare the two if Google apps matter to you.
Who should buy it
Pick this up if you want a simple screen for video, e-books and light gaming, a shared family tablet with parental controls, or a gift for someone who just wants something easy to use. It is also a sensible secondary device for the couch or the car.
Who should skip it
If you depend on Google apps, want an ad-free lockscreen, or plan to use a tablet as a laptop replacement, look elsewhere. Anyone who needs the latest Wi-Fi standard or lots of built-in storage should also shop around.
Bottom line
The Fire HD 10 is a capable entertainment tablet with a good screen, expandable storage and strong family features. Know the ad and app store trade-offs going in, and if the deal is still live when you read this, it is a sensible buy ahead of the holidays.
