TL;DR: Prime Video comes free with Amazon Prime (ad-supported, HD/HDR). The new Prime Video Ultra add-on (about $4.99/month) unlocks ad-free 4K, but live sports still carry ads. If you already have Prime, you are already paying for it. Easiest way in is a free Prime trial.
Prime Video is bundled into every Amazon Prime membership, but in 2026 Amazon split the ad-free, 4K experience into a paid add-on called Ultra. Here is what sits where.
Included with Prime (no extra cost)
- Thousands of movies and shows, including originals like Fallout, Reacher, The Boys and The Rings of Power.
- Live sports: NFL, NBA, WNBA, NASCAR and more.
- HD and HDR streaming (Dolby Vision was recently added at no charge), up to four simultaneous streams, and 50 offline downloads.
- Ad-supported: expect a few ads before and during on-demand titles.
What Prime Video Ultra adds (about $4.99/month or $45.99/year)
- Ad-free viewing on most content, 4K/UHD, Dolby Atmos.
- Five simultaneous streams and 100 offline downloads.
The catch
Ultra raised the old ad-free price, and it is not completely ad-free. Live sports and events still carry ads even on Ultra, which matters if you are mainly there for the NFL. If you watch in HD on a screen or two and do not mind ads during on-demand shows, the free tier is plenty.
